Before getting elite skills
I really need to know what build is best for when I use hench's. I've tried groups, but with spirits mostly, and the groups don't seem to realize that I can't cast Shelter often enough. So, I don't get many invites. Perhaps I need to ask a group, if invited, which build they want.
I haven't been able to finish the Boreas Seabed mission. I tried it with a group, and we failed. So I did it with hench's and won. But then it continues with the spear, and it took me 5 minutes to figure out where to go, what to do. And right away got spammed with a dozen mobs. I won't give up and will keep working at it. So I'm just looking for suggestions for the best build.
I did the Arborstone with just hench's, but it took me six tries.
I forgot to mention, Boreas Seabed was the first mission, for me, where the mobs went right after my spirits first. I couldn't keep them up because of the respawn time.

I find that a Spirit build works best with henchies, but seeing as how you don't have Ritual Lord you may need to go a different route.
However, I recommend that you cap Spirit Channeling from Cho, Spirit Empath in Shenzun Tunnels. You've already been through that area if you're at Boreas now.
Then go for 16 Channeling and 13 Spawning if you have the right runes and armor. Use Spirit Rift, Ancestor's Rage, Essence Strike, Spirit Burn, Channeled Strike, Cruel Was Daoshen (optional), and Spirit Channeling. Take the monk and rit henchies along with the tanks and probably the nuker, and the necro. Your damage output should be good enough to knock out most mobs. Spirit Channeling will give you energy so you can keep using your spells. Remember to use Spirit Channeling once your energy is 3/4 or 2/3, don't wait till you're almost empty
I henched it with my Rit and had little trouble.
If you want to run spirits, try the offensive spirit rit build in the build directory in these forums. Cap Signet of Spirits from Ferndale and then set your attributes for 16 or 13 Channel and 13 or 16 Commun. Use Pain, Bloodsong, Shadowsong, Painful Bond, Disenchantment, and Signet of Spirits. Shelter and Union are good if you want defense, otherwise take Spirit Rift and Ancestors Rage/Channeled Strike.
Let me know how it goes.

Just like to chime in and say thats pretty close to exactly what I did, and it worked beautifully. Of course, race through the game for Ritual Lord, as its just that nice, but, until then be prepared to be faced with some pretty lackluster elites.

I haven't had problems with getting into groups (I'm a Rit/N), but I feel your pain regarding spirits.
I use:
Weapon of Quickening (e) - caped from Viz Square
Flesh of my Flesh
Life
Recouperation
Boon of Creation
Explosive Growth
Mend Body and Soul
Generous was Tsungrai
Weapon of Quickening will recharge your binding rituals faster by 25%.
